It probably goes without saying that there are plenty of choices if you’re on the Danforth and looking for Greek food. Just about all of them offer high-quality food at great prices. What sets one above the others will ultimately be excellent service. The Friendly Greek at 551 Danforth provides just such world class service.
Upon arriving, we were greeted by a hostess at the door, who led us right to a table and took our drink orders before anything else. A waiter returned with our drinks and took our order, and within ten minutes had our food at our table. The plates themselves were large and piled with food that was perfectly cooked. I had the chicken souvlaki with steamed broccoli and cauliflower. The chicken was juicy (not something I would have expected from a meal so quickly delivered). The vegetables were a bit overdone but still good. We also had a gyro with French fries, pretty standard fare that was neither bad nor exceptional. The gyro doesn’t warrant an upgrade, but it probably isn’t the most exciting item on the menu.
Our waiter returned to our table twice during the meal, once to check on the food and the second time to see if we needed refills on our drinks. Too many times the waitstaff at most restaurants forget to do this, so it was a pleasant surprise that we didn’t have to ration out our drinks.
At the end of the meal, the waiter returned within moments of the last napkin hitting the plate. I’m not sure how he was able to time his approaches so well since the place was so busy. Even more amazing was that he did so without making us feel rushed. The Friendly Greek rates a world class for its customer service and for its food. ~ robis
